Regular Exercise, Key to Maintaining Mental Health

Posted on 24 Dec 2024 (Tuesday.) 14:25 WIB

Regular exercise not only provides benefits for physical health but also serves as an effective way to maintain mental health. A study conducted by R. Andalasari and Abdurahman Berbudi B.L, published in the Journal of Science and Technology in 2018, shows that regular physical activity can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, while also improving overall mood.

"Exercise has a direct effect on the body's nervous system. When exercising, the body releases endorphins, often referred to as the happiness hormone. This hormone provides a calming effect and enhances feelings of happiness," explained Andalasari in the article.

Additionally, exercise increases blood circulation to the brain, contributing to enhanced cognitive function and concentration. Physical activity can also reduce stress hormones like cortisol, allowing a person to feel more relaxed and calm after exercising.

According to experts, various types of exercise, from light activities like walking to more intense ones like running or weightlifting, can provide significant benefits for mental health. "The recommended duration is 30 minutes per day, at least three to five times a week, for optimal results," they added.

Exercise also contributes to increased self-confidence, reduced fatigue, and better sleep patterns. All of these factors contribute to better mental well-being.

"Exercise is one of the simplest therapies that anyone can access. Expensive equipment or luxurious facilities are not necessary, what matters is consistency," said Andalasari in the article published in Journal of Science and Technology, 2018 (ejurnal.poltekkesjakarta3.ac.id).

To encourage the public to be more active in exercising, various sports communities and programs are emerging in cities. From evening walks, marathons, group exercises, and others. The hope is that with more people becoming aware of the importance of physical activity, mental health issues like depression and anxiety can be reduced.
