Write by Millway Wellness Team • 06 Jul 2025 (Sunday.)

Beware of Bird Flu and Monkeypox

🔍 Summary:

The Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes RI) has issued a new warning regarding the reemergence of Bird Flu (H5N1) and Monkeypox (Mpox) cases in several regions. Although not yet declared a national outbreak, the public is urged to stay vigilant and maintain personal and environmental hygiene.

🐔 Bird Flu (H5N1): Reported in Central Java and West Kalimantan

  • Case Data: As of July 5, 2025, 5 confirmed cases of Bird Flu in humans have been recorded in Grobogan (Central Java) and Kubu Raya (West Kalimantan). All patients had previous contact with live poultry in traditional markets.
  • Symptoms observed: Sudden high fever, dry cough and sore throat, shortness of breath, pneumonia-like symptoms
  • Government response: Strict tracing was conducted, and poultry in affected areas were culled.

🧬 Monkeypox (Mpox): Imported Case from Abroad

  • Chronology: A man from West Jakarta tested positive for Monkeypox after returning from a trip to Singapore.
  • Initial symptoms: Blistering skin rash, fever, muscle aches, and fatigue
  • Treatment status: The patient is being treated at RSPI Sulianti Saroso Hospital and is in stable condition.

🛡️ Early Prevention Steps Before Seeing a Doctor

For Bird Flu (H5N1):

  • Self-isolate temporarily, especially if fever appears after contact with poultry
  • Drink warm water and get enough rest to boost immunity
  • Wear a mask at home to prevent transmission to family members
  • Clean and disinfect objects or clothing that may have been exposed to poultry
  • Do not consume raw or undercooked poultry – ensure food is thoroughly cooked

For Monkeypox (Mpox):

  • Do not touch suspicious rashes or sores on yourself or others
  • Wash hands with soap or alcohol-based hand sanitizer after outdoor activities
  • Wear loose, clean clothing, avoid friction that worsens the rash
  • Do not share towels, utensils, or personal grooming tools
  • ✅ If rash and fever occur, avoid public places and self-observe immediately

🏥 When to See a Doctor Immediately?

  • If high fever >38°C lasts for more than 2 days without improvement
  • Rapidly spreading blistering or pus-filled rash
  • Shortness of breath or chest pain
  • History of contact with infected animals or individuals

“Being alert doesn’t mean panic. Education, hygiene, and swift action are our best protection.”

Dr. Maxi Rein Rondonuwu, Director General of Disease Prevention and Control, Ministry of Health
