Wrong Pillow or Wrong Sleep Position?

Posted on 26 Dec 2024 (Thursday.) 11:50 WIB

"Wrong pillow" or "Wrong sleep position" is a term commonly used to describe the discomfort or pain experienced in the neck or back after sleeping. Both conditions can cause similar symptoms, but the difference lies in the cause:

1. Wrong Pillow

Wrong pillow can occur if the pillow does not properly support your head and neck while sleeping.

  • A pillow that is too high or too flat can cause tension in the neck and back.
  • A pillow that is old and has lost its firmness or support can also be the cause of this issue.

2. Wrong Sleep Position

Wrong sleep position occurs when you sleep in a position that is not natural, which can put excessive pressure on the neck, back, or even the hips. Wrong sleep position can happen if you frequently sleep in positions that strain or bend your neck or back.

How to Overcome Wrong Sleep Position / Wrong Pillow

1. Choose the Right Pillow

Make sure to use a pillow that properly supports your head and neck while sleeping. Choose a pillow that fits your sleep preferences, such as a thicker pillow for stomach sleeping or a thinner one for back sleeping.

2. Change Sleep Position

Try sleeping in a natural and comfortable position, such as sleeping on your side or stomach with a pillow under your head and between your legs.

3. Regular Exercise

Engaging in regular physical exercise can help strengthen the muscles of the neck, back, and overall body.

4. Stretching

Doing light stretches before bed and after waking up can help reduce muscle tension.

5. Consult a Health Expert

If the issue persists or worsens, consult a physiotherapist or massage therapist. They can offer further advice and may refer you for physical therapy or other treatments.
