Discovering the Meaning of Life in an Ever-Changing Era

Write by Millway Wellness Team • 23 Jun 2025 (Monday.)

“What is the true meaning of life?”

This question may have crossed all of our minds at some point, and it has become increasingly relevant in today’s world—a world that is moving rapidly, full of technology, and unexpected social changes.

Why Does This Question Keep Coming Back?

In the stillness of night or during significant moments in life, we often reflect: What is my purpose?
Technological advancements have transformed how we work, interact, and even view the future. Amid all these changes, an existential void emerges, prompting us to question the direction and meaning of our lives.

Various Perspectives on Life’s Meaning

Throughout history, humans have tried to answer this question through various paths:

  • Religious Teachings: Many religions see life as part of a divine plan. We live to fulfill a spiritual or moral mission.
  • Buddhism: Teaches the pursuit of enlightenment through detachment from worldly desires and the attainment of Nirvana.
  • Hedonism: Emphasizes the pursuit of pleasure and the avoidance of pain as central to a meaningful life.
  • Nihilism: Argues that life has no inherent meaning—all meaning must be created individually.
There is no absolute answer. But from these various viewpoints, we can distill several core principles that may help us live more mindfully and meaningfully.

Three Pillars for a Meaningful Life

After contemplating many thoughts and philosophies, we can summarize them into three main pillars:

  1. Preserving Life

The meaning of life can be found in simple actions: caring for and protecting life—be it human, animal, or the environment. Empathy, compassion, and kindness are core values in this pillar.

  2. Creating New Things

We, as humans, have a unique ability to create: art, ideas, technology, or solutions to global challenges. Creating something useful or beautiful gives us a deep sense of contribution and fulfillment.

  3. Being Fully Present

In a fast-paced and busy world, being present in the now is a powerful act of resistance. Appreciating every moment, enjoying small things, and not being stuck in the past or worried about the future is a way to live more consciously.

A Journey Without a Final Destination

Finding life’s meaning is not about a single final answer, but a reflective journey that keeps evolving. Sometimes the path is quiet, sometimes full of surprises. However, every step and every question is an essential part of the process.
